Lionel Rivera, the mayor of Colorado Springs, CO, has proclaimed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The City Council "reaffirms its commitment to address the issues of sexual assault and speak out against sexual violence by remembering victim/survivors, supporting survivors, holding perpetrators responsible for committing sexual attacks, and challenging societal myths and behaviors that perpetrate sexual violence in our community.”
WHEREAS, The United States Government has declared April “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” and
WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month is intended to draw attention to the fact that sexual violence remains an intolerable violent crime with public health implications for every person in Colorado Springs as victim/survivor or as a family member, significant other, neighbor or co-worker of a victim/survivor; and
WHEREAS, The World Health Organization and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have identified sexual assault as a costly and preventable health issue that impacts women, children, and men of all racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, No one person, organization, agency or community can eliminate sexual assault on their own - we must work together to educate our population about what can be done to prevent sexual assault, support victim/survivors and their significant others, and ensure that victim/survivors are not re-victimized; and
WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month is also meant to encourage education and public discourse that leads to full public competence in speaking out against sexual violence. With leadership, dedication and encouragement, there is compelling evidence that we can be successful in reducing incidents of this kind of assault against our citizens.
